A Rant

So I didn't have this post on my schedule, and I know that I just posted yesterday (A book review of A Rumored Fortune which you should check out) but I needed to rant a little.

Before I go on, let me give you some background info that will help you understand this rant. I have always loved the Phantom of the Opera. Yes, I've only seen the 2004 movie and I love it. I have read the book and honestly didn't like it that much. But the Phantom of the Opera was the first musical I saw (I saw it as a young child) I mean to listen to the stage version one day, but for now, I only have the movie to go off of.

So what's this rant over? The Phantom and Christine

Mostly how I hate it when people ship them

I am a total Raoul and Christine shipper, I honestly don't understand why people hate Raoul so much. Okay, in the book I hated him, but I love him in the musical. Basically, Raoul + Christine = Meant to be together

I have always thought that when Christine kisses the Phantom at the end, she did it to save Raoul. In fact, I say it everytime we watch the movie. She didn't do it because she was "choosing" the Phantom. Like, he's a father figure to her.

Let's get this straight

Phantom + Christine = Lust

The Phantom might "love" Christine, but from what you see of it, it's lust. Don't confuse love with lust. And she always looked up to him as a father-like figure until she actually met him which just makes their "love" (coughnotlovecoughcough) weirder

But

Raoul + Christine = Love

Raoul did everything in his power to protect Christine. They were perfect for each other! Just listen too "All I Ask of You". They're there to love, protect, and support each other.

Now let's get down to what really sparked this rant

I absolutely hate it when people do sequels where Raoul and Christine's love goes south.

Like

Wut

No

No

No

I saw this "sequel" to the book version of the Phantom of the Opera where Raoul has an affair and like WHAT NO RAOUL WOULDN'T DO THAT OKAY

And, apparently, Andrew Llyod Webber wrote a sequel to the musical where again Raoul and Christine's love flunks NO MR. WEBBER HOW COULD YOU (apparently I'm not the only one with this opinions, the show got such bad reviews that no one funded it or whatever)

BASICALLY

RAOUL AND CHRISTINE BELONG TOGETHER OKAY THEY LOVE EACH OTHER TO THE END OF THEIR DAYS AND HAVE A HAPPY MARRIAGE, LOTS OF KIDS. CHRISTINE DOESN'T REGRET CHOOSING LOVE AND NOT LUST SHE KISSED THE PHANTOM TO SAVE RAOUL.

Like

SHE WOULDN'T HAVE THIS

ON HER TOMBSTONE IF IT WASN'T TRUE

YOU SEE THAT

"BELOVED WIFE AND MOTHER"

SHE WAS HAPPY WITH RAOUL AND NO ONE CAN CHANGE THAT SO STOP SHIPPING CHRISTINE AND THE PHANTOM

Rant over

Please tell me what you think xD

  1. I never shipped The Phantom and Christine, also I always perceived that kiss out of pity and the Phantom realized that and knew she would never love him like he wanted her too, thus letting her go.

But, yes, their whole relationship was lust and Raoul was meant for her.

Also, The Phantom and Raoul??? Raoul hated him so much??? The Phantom tried to kill him in a ghastly way??? There was literally nothing but hate there, how is that ideal?

    1. Yes, that is exactly why she kissed him. And I agree wholeheartedly.

YES, PEOPLES STOP SHIPPING CHRISTINE AND THE PHANTOM

      Yep.

This might be a new pet peeve: People shipping the Phantom and Christine

  2. Yeah, no, I have never been in favor of Christine and the Phantom. I'm a total Christine/Raoul shipper (what is their ship name, anyway?). Funny, though, my sister was a huge Christine/Phantom shipper...until she read the book. Then she decided Christine was meant to be with Raoul after all.

So, yeah, I am totally with you on this, Ceci!

    1. Yes, Christine and Raoul for the win. I have no idea, maybe Raostine? (it sounds like roastin) (now I'm dying xD). What?? How could your sister do that??? At least she saw the light!!

Thank you, Elanor! Team Raostine! (now I'm cracking up again xDD)

  4. AHHHHHH *TACKLE HUGS YOU* FINALLY FINALLY SOMEONE AGREES WITH ME!!!!!!

(psst - if you watch the 25th Anniversary film of the stage version, there is an even better Raoul than the one in the movie. It will make you love Raoul even more, just saying. He's actually cute-looking ;) )

I could never ship Phantom and Christine, I saw the abusive situation very clearly when I first was introduced to the musical via the 2004 movie. That is one of the things that Lia and I will never agree on....*sigh*

I wrote a whole rant on this exact subject about a year ago, and it actually helped jumpstart my WIP "Shattered Chandelier". I've been wanting to publish it one of these days...lol.

And the hastag/ship name is #TeamRaoul. Very original, I know...

    WONDERFUL POST, CECI!!

    1. I was waiting to comment until you did Catherine XD XD XD I don't actually ship the Phantom and Christine, I just wish she and Raoul would adopt him. Because he is misunderstood and needs lots of hugs.

    2. Catherine:

*falls over by Catherine's tackle hug* WHAT I AM THE FIRST PERSON WHO AGREES WITH YOU ON THIS??????

(Okay now I REALLY have to watch that xD)

      Yeah, the Phantom and Christine...just......no

That WIP of yours is one of the ones I most want to read XD I will buy a copy of that book btw xD

#TeamRaoul....not sure if I like that or Raoustine better. (I can never write or read that without cracking up xD)

Thank you Catherine! *goes back in your post archive and reads that post :P*

      Lilah:

Lol, XD I agree with you about the fact that the Phantom is misunderstood, but I just hate it when people ship the Phantom and Christine (if you couldn't tell) I think that if the Phantom had been treated better, he would be a better person. I honestly think that it was the ugliness of his soul, instead of his face, that made Christine turn away from him.

  5. OH MY WORD YES. THIS POST.

I haven’t actually seen or read Phantom of the Opera - though I know mostly what happens. And why on earth would people ship Christine and the Phantom???? The guy is just way too creepy, obsessive, and lustful. I always thought Raoul was the perfect candidate for shippers.

But gosh . . . that relationship of Christine x Phantom is just abusive and WRONG. So thank you for writing this. Very well put!

    1. Thank you Nicole! I also wonder why people think that the Phantom is romantic (I also never understood why Christine and Raoul didn't just LEAVE but that's a topic for another post)

That relationship is just wrong, and compared to Christine and Raoul, I honestly don't see why some people hate Raoul so much and ship Christine with the Phantom!

      Thanks, again :DD

  6. I just stumbled across your blog just now and my word this rant captures my views exactly. The Phantom is a horrible, manipulative jerk and Christine deserves so much better. I also don't understand how people can glorify and romanticise such an obviously abusive relationship?
LOVE NEVER DIES!! Good grief that show is awful! It also features Christine's son, who is later revealed to be the Phantom's son, and Raoul is drunk for most of it.
    Not. Good. At. All.
Anyway, I enjoyed this post very much :) Thanks for writing it!

    1. Thank you for reading and commenting Chelsea! I agree 1000000000000000000% with what you said. I know! Like, this is clearly wrong and yet there are people screaming, "OH MY GOSH THIS IS SO ROMANTIC".....Um......no.......Yeah, the only "romantic" relationship there is Raoul and Christine
OH MY GOSH I WAS READING THE WIKI SUMMARY OF THAT SHOW AND WAS GOING NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO THE WHILE TIME. AAAAAAAAAAAAARGHAJKFDSFLUYSGDUHAJK. Yeah. No desire to see/hear that show whatsoever. The character's actions were so...out of character....
I'm glad you liked it! And you're welcome! *has the desire to put the "You're Welcome" Moana gif*
